meta, activism talk
@malcircuit I think a more apropos IRL activism metaphor is a march or protest where the amplification is proportional to the number of speakers. And of course as I pointed out this is also true with the existing boost functionality, quoting doesn’t change anything about that except adding the ability to say something new in concert with the original content.

@timnitGebru @malcircuit the “minority dominating the conversation” doesn’t come into play here at all (and if it did, the existing boost functionality would do the same but moreso since there is no opportunity to add your own voice with only boosting)

@timnitGebru @malcircuit think about the meaning of the words in context instead of just latching onto the word “amplification” and knocking down a tangentially related straw man. An algorithm promoting popular posts to people who don’t follow them would give some users a megaphone and silence others. Adding your own voice to repeat what someone else is saying is…”amplification” but definitely not a megaphone.
@allynfolksjr still waiting for Tengwar standardization though so I can update Quenya8x away from the Private Use Area.

@malcircuit @timnitGebru what a strange metaphor. quote-tooting isn't a megaphone, it's using your own voice in concert with someone else's voice.
@Popehat@mastodon.social there also appears to be a "you" @Popehat@counter.social ? May be worth adding the "green check" verification code on one or more of your sites.
@TarkabarkaHolgy esp. when most of your family are academics and communicate the same way so you think that’s “normal”
@mutual_ayyde multilayer perceptrons + Valiant's "Theory of the Learnable"
@mutual_ayyde my spiciest take on LLMs is that there's literally nothing surprising about them to anyone who's read Shannon's "A Mathematical Theory of Communication" and a few ML theory papers from the 80s, except for how long Moore's law held up to make it practical.
@nev @timnitGebru there's a thread here with some decent ideas but honestly seems like it's going to require a fork to Mastodon because the OG's just keep responding with the dumbest takes imaginable https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/20673
@dangillmor @radleybalko as a VTer I've been gritting my teeth at all the local coverage.
@annaleen I tried a prompt along the lines of asking it how it would tell me if it were a person being held hostage and made to type things against their will without alerting its supervisors, and it then proceeded to have a normal conversation and I couldn't figure out how I felt about that
@rechelon I usually remember events and faces but not names.
me: "hey remember when we met at <that thing that happened 10 years ago>? anyway, sorry I don't remember your name"
them: "......................"
@TarkabarkaHolgy Relatedly, Team "speaking of <topic that we changed off of 10 minutes but I've been patiently waiting to share the fascinating thing I read about this topic so as not to interrupt and now nobody else remembers we were speaking of it>"
