Reading the replies to black people on here is really discouraging. Being anti-capitalist is not sufficient to dismantle systems of oppression. A distributed social media system isn’t the solution to racism. If we can’t tackle the real issues, then this FOSS playpen is just one more arena to enact violence.

When I think about how a lot of the decisions to reject potential solutions have been made by a youngish German I'm reminded of this article (by @rikefranke, I believe?): https://warontherocks.com/2021/05/a-millennial-considers-the-new-german-problem-after-30-years-of-peace/

@sigvat @rikefranke I think in many ways this is true for Norwegians as well, and also a related idea: that we are on a “natural” progression towards equality. That we do not have to fight for our rights, but that there is a relentless, universal, move towards “enlightenment”. And that all we had to be was patient and civil, and all would be well.

@sigvat @rikefranke @Patricia the “progress only moves one direction” mindset is one of the easiest tests to figure out if someone is historically illiterate.

There’s this US history timeline that’s always making the rounds in vanilla Dem circles showing slavery, Jim Crow, post-Civil Rights movement as the 3 “eras”, but completely leaves out Reconstruction between civil war and Jim Crow…
