The quote tweet feature on can be used to

1) Appropriately credit/cite people
2)Amplify people's voices and add context.

Its not just a dog piling feature. I've found it difficult to rally people into action etc here which is one of the most important ways I've used Twitter.

For example, when @refugeesinlibya are asking people to participate in a 2 day campaign etc.

Also "dogpiling" is a very important feature of exposing racist institutions.

@timnitGebru One possibility is to use ActivityPub post formats to enable a quote-like function on only some types of posts—like, being able to Quote a blog post, or a photo, but not a short remark. Or maybe to allow post authors to manually enable/disable quoting—or to be able to limit *who* can quote it.

I think there's a lot of possibilities beyond "no quoting at all" and "quotes that work exactly like Twitter's".

@nev @timnitGebru there's a thread here with some decent ideas but honestly seems like it's going to require a fork to Mastodon because the OG's just keep responding with the dumbest takes imaginable github.com/mastodon/mastodon/i

@elfprince13 @nev @timnitGebru It does seem like core #Mastodon developers often double down on their original design decisions rather than consider others
