I agree that manual quote tweets are a huge burden on the quoter. But I think of them like cigarette taxes. They internalize what would otherwise very likely become a burden on the rest of us, in the form of a more hostile environment rather than cancer or emphysema.

@JKuznicki I dunno this seems backwards. It’s not much harder to do manual quote toots, the issue is that it’s extra work for the reader to click through and see what toot is being quoted.

@timlee @JKuznicki And I’d imagine adding work for the reader is more effective at reducing the appeal & virality of the QT dunk.

@timlee @normative It seems likely to increase decontextualization but also to cut down death threats and stalking.
