@yasmina feel free to DM with an intro and brief description of what you're thinking of :)
@elfprince13 i am new bed to the platform / where do I DM you ? 😂🤔
@yasmina on the web, click on profile -> "..." menu -> direct message. not sure about various apps.
@elfprince13 In 1994 I had a vision of a globe-based time-animated atlas of world history, including depictions of every building in every city throughout time.
I earned a MS in GIS in 2008 and since 2010 have used ArcGIS to edit and attribute geospatial shapefile data so I can process them with TerraTools to generate 3D landscapes, most recently for VBS at my current job.
@Surazeus that's awesome. I hope you'll give our NYC model a try and share some of your creations! I believe we even support exporting multipatch shapefiles that work in ArcGIS.
@elfprince13 Now, if only someone would make a model of 1st-C Jerusalem for my students…
@AKMA we've gotten the "when will you be able to do historical cities" question more than *I* expected when started Geopipe, although perhaps exactly as often as someone who spends a lot of time thinking about historical cities might expect.
@elfprince13 We obviously don't have a thorough record of Jerusalem, but even just one or another interpretation of the Temple would be immensely helpful in fleshing out students' imagination of what it was like.
@AKMA at the scale of a few buildings that’s the sort of thing where you could probably hire a 3D artist to do quite a good job
@AKMA I had friends in grad school who worked here and the archaeology / ancient history applications were frequently discussed
@AKMA oops apparently forgot to post the link. “here” in context of previous post is http://vis.cs.brown.edu/areas/themes/vr.html
@elfprince13 I can’t easily discover what the scope is of these models (city, block, etc)? Seems I need to create an account first?
@paulmelis Coverage area is the whole city (~1000km²), you must select the specific area(s) you want to download.
An account will keep track of the areas you've downloaded and allow us to notify you when we release improved versions of the models that you might want to then re-download.
Also raises the technical threshold somewhat for script kiddies using bots to run up a massive bill on our CDN.
@elfprince13 interesting ! Let us catchup as we may collaborate !
