How did I make it like 40 years on this planet before anyone told me about harissa?

All y'all are fired

@ricci I am SO INTO SAUCES. My sister and I call ourselves the saucy sisters and we dressed up as sauces for Halloween. Obviously my favorite sauce is Lao Gan Ma, the beloved Chinese chili oil sauce, but I love many kinds of sauces.

@irene I love chili oils, I'll have to see if I can find some of this next time I go to the Chinese supermarket

@ricci @irene dude this is like THE chili oil if they don't have it you need to find a new Asian grocery

@regehr @irene FWIW that Chili Break I mentioned earlier isn't an Asian version of chili oil, it's a mesoamerican version that's smoked and ohh.... 🤤

It's a Utah thing, Harmon's usually has it - or they show up at farmers markets and stuff. (Get the original, the Habanero one is just spicy, it's missing the smokiness of the original.)

@ricci @irene woah, what the fuck, are you telling me about a spicy thing from utah???

@regehr @ricci @irene I am thinking about ordering some just to find out what constitutes spicy in Utah

@irene @regehr @ricci I have a good friend from Utah and I went to Park City to meet his family and practically the first thing his mom told me was how her favorite food was lettuce.

@jroelofs @dan @irene @regehr Idk, people put all kinds of vegetables and other terrible things in Jello

@ricci @jroelofs @irene @regehr as someone with vaguely Midwestern heritage, I rely on Utah to prove that there are worse things you can do with Jello

@ricci @jroelofs @irene @regehr The difference between our two cultures is that when I went to Beijing to meet @irene's family, they served me a weird gelatin dish to see what they could get the white guy to eat.

When @irene went to visit my dad's family in Ohio, she thought they were just trolling her when they brought out a plate of Jello salad... until my cousin walked in and said "wow, Jello salad, I'm going to skip dinner and just eat a big plate of that!'

@ricci @dan @jroelofs @regehr To be clear, this is the only kind of jello my culture eats. It usually has peanuts in it and while weird, it’s delicious. redhousespice.com/pork-rind-je

@irene @ricci @dan @jroelofs @regehr huh, I only just now learned that nata de coco is Filipino and not Chinese in origin, even though in the US I've only ever seen it carried at Chinese grocery stores.
