okay i think i've put together enough material to give a rough overview of the history for why "there is no alternative" is basically due to persistent errors that come from marxists engaged in motivated reasoning

@mutual_ayyde do you see like any inflection points at which alternative anticapitalist pathways closed and the rise and fall of statist socialism or hegemony of marxism on the left was more or less locked in?

@bcham i mean most historians i've read think that its the one-two punch of the bolshevik revolution and the establishment of the communist international which required fealty to the USSR and the defeat of the republicans in the spainish civil war which delegitimized anarchism

one thing to note about the spanish civil war tho is that guerrilla warfare and a broader social revolution was actively discouraged b/c many republicans wanted to remain legitimate in the eyes of liberal states!
