@CaptainHanyuu are you sure that’s not John Constantine as played by Matt Ryan? 👀

@charliejane I’m suddenly reminded of the whole descolada sentience argument plotline in the later Ender’s Game series entries 🙃

@allynfolksjr I almost exclusively buy ambidextrous mice from Razer and the biggest problem is the software support on Mac for the nice DPI switching features

The Furby source code is public and heavily commented. For example, it turns the microphone off when the motors are running.

Furby was the 1998 version of ChatGPT and tons of people thought it actually slowly learned English words. The NSA was alarmed. However it turned out the "learning" process was just on a timer and the "microphone" only triggers on loud sounds.

@jcurries @mattb @SwiftOnSecurity (otoh as a former 90s kid my honest open is that that was a legendary stroke of genius)

@SwiftOnSecurity @mattb @jcurries the number of 90s parents who have VERY special words to share with her…

If anyone tries to tell you that the #vaccines increase your risk for heart issues, you can tell them the risk from infection is many, many times worse -- and longer term.

A quiet Sunday night in NYC, gently lit by street lights that you'll find in Geopipe's New York City. The traffic is a whole different story ;)

Today's "how did nobody notice this before" bug uncovered by Asahi: systemd-homed is broken on 4K (native) sector disks (and is probably also as a consequence inefficient on 512e disks, i.e. the vast majority of consumer HDDs).

@arossp @phishissick my brother was just telling me about a college friend whose parents, as an intentional social experiment, apparently programmed him with a bunch of hilariously incorrect words for various concepts that don’t come up that often in conversation and these were still being discovered by accident as a senior in college

@arclight @bitsavers I'd love to see a book about how MBA ideology took HP from a world-leading engineering firm to little more than a overpriced printer-ink scam.

@nova you might enjoy following @KevinCarson1 and/or @C4SS for radically pro-free-market critiques of extant capitalism. They tend to be a bit further left than I am personally, but can be a great starting point for a largely underrepresented view.

@charliejane @sophygurl If you're ever in Providence, RI during a holiday, check out the First Baptist Church in America (basically adjacent to Brown + RISD campuses). Fantastic organ + choir music the few times I've been (and the history is pretty awesome too)

@regehr @steve @ricci @dev we had theoretical potential for about ~320’ elevation drop on my parents property, although it was very hard to make the turn from the upper meadow down towards the driveway (basically have to stick a hard turn stage-right where coming out of the woods in this video), we could pretty reliably get either the bottom or middle ~100’ drop in a single run.

@ricci @dev @steve @regehr as a someone who grew up building bobsled/luge-run style banked turns down old logging+sugaring trails I have no idea what the attraction of city sledding would be 😜

@Patricia ohhhh, yeah, probably. I just assumed from context you were talking about the previous speaker 😂

@Patricia fair enough! :D

if it's a topic of interest, there's a pretty good interview here (basically 2:01 to the end) explaining some of the existing problems: youtu.be/Ywqt6ThH1bM?t=121

@Patricia I am of course also skeptical that we will see anything resembling an improvement from any of the possible replacements, but she bears an enormous personal responsibility for converting our representative democracy into an oligarchy
