@Kayak many knife sharpening tools say very specifically that they don't work on scissors 🤔

@arossp (although I have twice appeared *on* a podcast, these were also roughly a decade apart)

@arossp if it makes you feel better I don’t listen to any podcasts. At least a 4-5x slowdown compared to just reading the content

re: covid-19 politics

@astrid I’m of the “those who can’t remember the past are doomed to repeat it” school of thought. Especially given the current controversy surrounding gain-of-function research at BU.

covid-19 politics [poll]

@astrid I'm curious how many of the respondents have been keeping up with the latest developments in the debate. propublica.org/article/senate-

@arossp @fakegreekgrill he got banished not for any theological heterodoxy, but for having the audacity to suggest maybe the good folks of Massachusetts shouldn’t try to forcibly impose their beliefs on the local native tribes

@arossp @fakegreekgrill this is the literal origin story of Rhode Island (or more accurately Providence Plantations), leading directly to Roger Williams subsequent invention of separation of church and state

A Linux audio driver walks into a bar

Bartender: "what would you like?"

pulseaudio[18814]: No object for name "alsa_output.pci-0000_04_00.1.hdmi-stereo"

Bartender: "I can't hear you?"

I've just been indiscriminately following back everyone who's followed me since 2020 or so, and while I think I'm reaching critical mass and may need to scale back on that soon, what strikes me is that so far I haven't had a single follow out of nearly 1000 that I've obviously regretted. I can't remotely imagine this being feasible on the other place.

Of course, it's possible it's just because the 500 bitcoin bros I've accidentally followed all haven't said anything yet, but I'm still kind of impressed.

In retrospect, these two tweets may have been Elon's most visionary.

Them: #Andor is the least merchandisable #StarWars; no one wants a lego set about trudging to work every day under oppressive conditions.

Me: *spends weeks delightedly building a lego diorama of Ferrix*

@arjen @enbrown the technical building blocks **mostly** exist to build a replacement that would render such legislation irrelevant, but they haven't been assembled in the right way yet...

@lzg I thought this was supposed to be the non-bird-site

@ingmar (a) okay but it’s *on* Disney+ (b) the Filoni oeuvre is consistently politically aware and eg Clone Wars S7 and Bad Batch have also been made since the Disney+ era began

@ingmar Are we ignoring Dave Filoni’s work on Rebels for some reason?

Let’s try this again. Where you at #fediverse? Boosts welcome so we can get the best sample size.

Birdsite commentary

I think my favorite part of the Twitter Blue fiasco is that he appears to have implemented the Something Awful style of moderation-with-money, except HE DID IT WRONG.

The correct way to do it would be to charge people for any rule infraction, not impersonation. If they violate the TOS they get booted and have to pay $8 to rejoin.

Instead, he made it cheap to go viral by impersonating famous people.
